Pope Leo XIV declared that the Catholic Church must integrate with modern culture rather than reject it. He stated that a mature synthesis between faith and cultural life is a necessary condition for living out the Christian vocation. This directive was issued during his weekly general audience on Oct. 28 in St. Peter’s Square.

The pope emphasized that the relationship between faith and culture is rooted in the Incarnation. He argued that faith enriches every culture it encounters. He also stated that faith must itself become a culture shaped by Christ. He urged Catholics to avoid living their faith in opposition or hostility toward modern society.

The address connected the Church’s current mission to its historical role in education. The pope noted that many medieval universities originated from the Church. He cited the Second Vatican Council’s pastoral constitution Gaudium et Spes. That document called for the Church to overcome illiteracy and ensure access to fundamental cultural opportunities.

Leo highlighted the need to expand higher education, particularly for women. He encouraged Christians to deepen their scientific and cultural knowledge alongside their religious understanding. He said the Church promotes culture as a service to the human being. He described it as a good in itself that aids in fulfilling one’s vocation on earth.

The pontiff explained that cultural expression opens minds to fundamental questions about human existence. He stated that this preparation helps individuals receive the Gospel. He quoted St. John Paul II to say that a faith that does not become culture is not fully embraced or faithfully lived. He argued that faith is interwoven with traditions, art, poetry, and science.

Leo instructed theologians to collaborate with experts in other disciplines. He argued that intellectual inquiry and religious formation must develop together. He said the Church draws from various cultures all that is good, beautiful, and true. This process allows the Church to embody and transmit the message of the Gospel.

The pope concluded by saying that faith can take root in all cultures. He stated that faith shapes cultures through charity, service, and the recognition of God as Father. He urged believers to strive to understand the cultures in which they live. He said this understanding is essential for communicating the faith in a credible way.
