Arapahoe County deputies arrested Aurora Public Schools Superintendent Michael Giles Jr. on suspicion of driving under the influence on the morning of October 31. The sheriff's office confirmed the detention on Tuesday, marking a sudden legal challenge for the district's top leader.
A deputy stopped Giles around 12:49 a.m. Saturday near the intersection of E-470 and E. Quincy Avenue. The officer reported that Giles failed to stay in his lane and drove through a red traffic light. Following the stop, the deputy administered standardized field sobriety tests before making the arrest.
Giles has led the school district since July 2023. His attorney, Benjamin Hartford, said Giles understands the gravity of the situation and the concerns it raises for the community. Hartford noted that Giles is treating the matter with seriousness and responsibility.
Hartford explained that neither Giles nor his legal team will comment on specific allegations while the case is pending. The attorney stated that Giles intends to address the matter through the legal process and asked for patience before conclusions are drawn.
Court records show an advisement hearing took place on Monday afternoon. A judge set Giles' bond at $1,000. His counsel is scheduled to appear in court again at 9 a.m. on December 15.
