BYD is moving to establish a foothold in the ultra-luxury market by debuting its upcoming flagship electric sedan in the United Arab Emirates. Yangwang general manager Hu Xiaoqing confirmed this week that the global launch for the vehicle will be held in the Gulf nation rather than domestically. While a specific calendar date for the rollout has not been set, the company is pushing forward with preparations for the international debut.
The new model is designed to compete directly with established luxury marques such as Rolls-Royce, Bentley, and Mercedes-Maybach. Reports indicate the vehicle will be the largest and most luxurious electric sedan produced by the manufacturer to date, with a physical profile comparable to the Rolls-Royce Phantom. This push into the high end represents a significant pivot for a manufacturer previously recognized for affordable city cars like the Seagull, a hatchback that sells for under $10,000 in China.
The sedan is being developed under Yangwang, one of three sub-brands including Denza and FangChengBao that operate alongside the Dynasty and Ocean lines. Yangwang serves as the showcase for the company's most advanced technological capabilities. Previous vehicles in this tier have utilized the quad-motor e4 platform, capable of 1,300 horsepower, as well as the DiSus-X intelligent body control system, features which allow a car to jump or drive on three wheels.
Details regarding the upcoming executive sedan are beginning to emerge despite the heavy camouflage used during testing. While specific specifications have not been fully released, the vehicle is reportedly the first to incorporate the company's solid-state batteries. This battery technology is slated for a wider rollout in 2027, according to Executive Vice President Stella Li. Additionally, the sedan features rear-hinged coach doors, a first for the brand, and was photographed at a Flash Charging station, suggesting support for megawatt charging speeds.
Zheng Yu, Yangwang's executive general manager, has stated the car will feature 'unprecedented disruptive technology,' though no further specifics on the underlying systems have been provided. Images released by Hu Xiaoqing last month showed the vehicle undergoing testing. Local reports suggest the car's length will be approximately 5,500 millimeters, or 216 inches, placing it in the same size class as a Maybach S-Class.
Pricing for the vehicle is rumored to start in the 2 million yuan range, which converts to approximately $300,000. This cost would place it significantly above the brand's current lineup, which includes the U7 electric sedan starting at $98,000. The manufacturer also offers the U8 and U8L plug-in hybrid luxury off-road SUVs, as well as the U9 electric super-coupe. The extended U8L represents the brand's current highest-priced mass-produced vehicle, with a starting price of 1.45 million yuan.
