Kansas City is one of seven finalist cities selected to host the NCAA men's basketball Final Four between 2032 and 2036. The new stadium in Kansas, Kansas, serves as the proposed venue for the event. The National Collegiate Athletic Association announced the shortlist on Tuesday, narrowing the field from a larger group of applicants.
The city has a deep history with the tournament. Don Pfannenstiel helped oversee the last men's Final Four held in the region in 1988. He served in marketing and communications for the organizing committee at that time. Pfannenstiel noted that the city has hosted more Final Fours than any other location. He cited the presence of major conference teams, historically the Big 8 and currently the Big 12, which have played there nearly every year since the 1950s.
Kathy Nelson, the CEO of the Greater Kansas City Sports Commission, described the selection as a significant moment for the region. She stated that receiving the email confirming finalist status was a catch-your-breath moment. The bid aims to unite the two cities that share the name Kansas City across the state line. Nelson expressed pride that the NCAA views the area as a single entity for major events.
Pfannenstiel recalled the 1988 tournament as a 20-month process that was tiring but rewarding. He keeps memorabilia from that event in his basement, including a game ticket and a piece of Kemper Arena. He also retains two posters from the 1998 tournament, one from before the event and one from after. He said he received many calls from people wanting to buy those specific posters.
The city is not the largest in the country, but officials argue it embraces major events with a level of promotion that other cities do not match. Pfannenstiel emphasized that the region’s history and infrastructure support this claim. The bid is intended to leverage the existing sports culture in the area for a high-profile national event.
The NCAA will announce the final selection for the 2032 to 2036 window sometime after July 2027. The decision will determine which city hosts the championship games during that period. Kansas City will remain in contention alongside the other six finalist locations until that announcement is made.
