Dale Brown, the longtime architect of the LSU men's basketball program, died Friday, October 23, at the age of 90.

Brown served as head coach for 25 seasons between 1972 and 1997, accumulating 448 victories to become the most successful coach in school history. During his tenure, he guided the Tigers to four Southeastern Conference regular-season titles and 13 appearances in the NCAA Tournament. The team reached the Final Four twice, first in 1981 and again in 1986.

The news of his death arrived just two days after LSU revealed that Brown would receive the 2027 John R. Wooden Legends of Coaching Award. The honor recognizes his lasting influence on the sport and his on-court accomplishments. He coached several notable players during those 25 years, including NBA Hall of Famer Shaquille O'Neal, Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf, and Rudy Macklin.

In a statement, Brown's family described him as a humanitarian who prioritized people over ego. "We have lost the most loving and most loved man any of us has ever known," the family said. They noted that he "always led with the heart" and that the people of Louisiana "loved him right back." Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry posted on X that Brown "put LSU Basketball on the map." Sports journalist Marc J. Spears also used social media to call Brown "an extraordinary human."

Brown arrived in Baton Rouge in 1972 to build a competitive program. He spent years traveling the state to promote the team and build a fanbase. His efforts paid off in 1979 when LSU won its first SEC regular-season title since 1954. The following year, the team made its first Final Four run. Brown earned the Associated Press National Coach of the Year award in 1981 and was named SEC Coach of the Year four times. He is a member of the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame, and the LSU Athletic Hall of Fame.

In 2022, the university named the main floor of the Pete Maravich Assembly Center Dale Brown Court. The name was updated in 2023 to Dale Brown/Sue Gunter Court to honor two former coaches. In a 2025 interview with WAFB reporter Chris Nakamoto, Brown recalled a game against top-ranked Kentucky where all five starters fouled out. He told the remaining players, "From now on you are not substitutes, you are backups," and LSU won the contest. Brown credited his mother for teaching him to stand up for what is right. He was born in Minot, North Dakota, on October 31, 1935, and died eight days before his 91st birthday.
