A magnitude 7 earthquake struck the northern Tibet region of China on Thursday evening, resulting in at least 16 deaths and 46 injuries. The seismic event caused significant structural damage centered around the city of Nagqu, where local officials confirmed the collapse of hundreds of residential buildings and livestock facilities.
The Nagqu media office reported that 339 homes and 20 livestock sheds were destroyed. Among the injured, 11 individuals are in serious condition while the other 35 sustained minor injuries. Search and rescue teams are currently active in the zone, with more than 1,600 personnel from the local county deployed to assist in recovery operations.
Logistical operations have been heavily impacted by the event. Local railway authorities implemented emergency protocols to stop all trains from passing through the affected corridor. Additionally, National Highway 317 has been partially closed due to rockfalls. Only emergency and support vehicles are permitted to pass while crews work to clear debris from the roadway.
Relief supplies have begun arriving at the site to support the ongoing recovery. These shipments include 1,000 prefabricated housing units, approximately 3,000 tents and folding beds, flashlights, and winter clothing. The arrival of these goods aims to stabilize the immediate needs of the displaced population in the high-altitude region.
Communication networks experienced disruptions in parts of the area, according to reports from Xinhua, the state news agency. The U.S. Geological Survey placed the epicenter 191 kilometers east-northeast of Nagqu at a depth of 18 kilometers. The quake occurred at 10:33 p.m. local time in a sparsely populated zone. Nagqu is located more than 300 kilometers north of Lhasa, the regional capital.
Chinese national broadcaster CCTV identified this as the most significant seismic event in the region over the last five years. Weather forecasts indicate intermittent snow is expected across the zone for the next three days, a condition that may complicate rescue efforts and supply distribution. Authorities continue to monitor the situation as infrastructure repairs proceed.
