Two high-speed trains collided in Toledo province on Wednesday morning, killing at least ten people. The state rail infrastructure authority, Adif, suspended all services between Madrid and the southern region of Andalucía immediately after the impact. Officials described the event as a rear-end collision that occurred on the line connecting the capital with Seville.

Esther Padilla, a spokesperson for the regional government of Castilla-La Mancha, confirmed the death toll in interviews with local media. She stated that authorities are currently verifying at least ten fatalities. Padilla warned that the final count may rise. She noted that the information arriving from the scene is grim. The number of injured remains unknown but is expected to be high.

Spain’s state broadcaster, TVE, reported that a moving train struck the rear of another service. The force of the impact knocked two carriages off the elevated track. Regional television footage showed the wreckage scattered across the embankment below the line. Twisted metal and broken panels were visible in the debris field.

Manuel Galán, the mayor of Urda, a town near Toledo, said emergency services requested the use of a local sports hall. The facility is being prepared to treat the injured. Galán confirmed that medical teams are working to accommodate the surge of patients arriving from the crash site.

Government sources told El País that the severity of this accident could exceed that of the Adamuz rail disaster. That previous incident occurred in January and resulted in 46 deaths. The current crash is the deadliest rail accident in the country in recent years.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez posted on X that he is in constant contact with the transport minister and the regional president. He said emergency services are coordinating with local administrations to assist the victims. Sánchez expressed solidarity with the families of those affected. The opposition leader, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, also posted on X to say he is very concerned about the new rail accident. He emphasized that the priority is to support the victims and the emergency teams on the ground.

Spain’s main political parties suspended their planned activities for the day. The leaders were gearing up for a general election scheduled for next month. The pause in campaigning reflects the national focus on the recovery efforts in central Spain.
