The champion now targets a bout with Charles Oliveira, while Petr Yan secures a path to a Sean O'Malley rematch after closing his trilogy with Merab Dvalishvili.

Two rounds. That was all it took for UFC featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski to end the unbeaten run of Movsar Evloev on Saturday at UFC 333. The quick stoppage clears a path for Volkanovski to potentially return to the lightweight division, the weight class where he has suffered two of his three professional losses.
The fight card produced clear next steps for both main event winners. Volkanovski is positioned to face Charles Oliveira, a matchup that could determine the next contender for the 155-pound belt. Meanwhile, bantamweight champion Petr Yan defeated Merab Dvalishvili by unanimous decision, concluding their three-fight series. Yan now looks to Sean O'Malley, who holds a controversial victory over the champion from 2022.
For Volkanovski, the most logical next opponent is Oliveira. ESPN notes that if Oliveira defends his BMF title against Diego Lopes at UFC 335 in December, a 2027 bout between the two MMA legends would be a timely match. Volkanovski previously told ESPN in September that he did not love the idea of jumping the line at lightweight to fight Justin Gaethje, especially with Arman Tsarukyan as an obvious title challenger. A win over Oliveira would legitimize Volkanovski as a serious contender for the heavyweight belt.
Yan’s path is defined by his trilogy win over Dvalishvili. The decision victory caps a series that began with Yan losing in 2022. O'Malley remains the most prominent challenger for Yan, despite a mixed record since his 2024 loss to Dvalishvili. O'Malley has since defeated Song Yadong and Aiemann Zahabi. Song also has a case for a title shot, having beaten O'Malley in January, but O'Malley’s head-to-head history makes him the likely next opponent for Yan.
Losers on the card also have defined paths forward. Evloev, who admitted his future as a challenger might require a second attempt, will likely face gatekeeper Pat Sabatini next. Sabatini holds a 9-2 record in the UFC. Dvalishvili, coming off his second consecutive loss, is expected to quickly return to the cage. A rematch with Umar Nurmagomedov is the most probable option. The two fighters last met at UFC 311 in January 2025, a bout that featured genuine heat and injuries for both men.
The card also featured a notable performance by Aaron Pico. His win over Patricio Pitbull in April set the stage for a potential fight with Jean Silva. With Diego Lopes moving to lightweight, Silva is the next logical step for Pico. The matchup would test Pico's potential against a top-10 opponent, providing a critical test of his durability and skill in the division.
