Anthropic targets small business owners with new Claude Duet agent

A new AI application designed for professional workflows launches in research preview, offering automated task management for Pro and Max subscribers.

The race to build the definitive AI agent just gained a significant new contender. Anthropic has officially unveiled Claude Duet, a specialized application aimed squarely at the professional and small business sectors. This move places the company directly in competition with a crowded field of emerging tools, including Meta Muse, OpenAI Dots, Hark, Instinct, Grok Bot, and Fo. The launch represents a strategic pivot for Anthropic as the industry shifts its focus from simple conversational assistants to autonomous agents capable of executing complex workflows.

The technical specifications of the new platform are substantial. Claude Duet is built upon the Claude Opus 5.5 model, providing a robust foundation for its operations. It features integration with more than 6,000 connectors and plug-ins available through the Claude Marketplace. This extensive connectivity allows the agent to interact with a wide array of third-party services. Furthermore, the system is equipped to handle financial transactions, enabling online purchases via Stripe’s Link digital wallet or Shopify’s Shop Pay.

Anthropic has drawn a clear line between Duet and the personal AI assistants currently dominating the consumer market. The company explicitly states that Duet is not designed for handling personal errands or booking travel tickets. It also differs from competitors by not displaying its browser activity in real-time to the user. Instead, the tool is engineered to act as a professional aide. It focuses on building daily briefings, generating custom dashboards, and suggesting strategic actions based on the user’s existing data. The agent operates within its own virtual machine, allowing it to complete tasks in the background while the user continues with other work.

The operational model of Duet emphasizes proactive engagement. The system monitors ongoing tasks and delivers recommendations without waiting for user prompts. When the agent encounters a step that requires specific human judgment, it pauses and returns to the user for approval. This approach is intended to streamline professional workflows while maintaining necessary oversight. The company notes that this background processing capability is central to the product's value proposition for busy professionals.

Security and privacy measures are central to the new release. Anthropic introduced a specialized classifier designed to scan every message to prevent the leakage of sensitive information. By default, the agent is programmed to decline requests that ask for credit card numbers or government identification details. These safeguards are intended to build trust among users who are entrusting the system with professional data and financial authority.

The scope of what Duet can do is defined by specific boundaries to ensure safety. While it can execute online purchases, it will not trade securities or transfer money between bank accounts. Sensitive steps, particularly those involving payments, always require explicit user approval. This limitation distinguishes it from fully autonomous financial agents and addresses potential concerns about unchecked financial power.

Availability for the general public is currently limited. Claude Duet is accessible as a native app on both iOS and Android devices. It is also available on the web through the Claude.ai platform. However, access is restricted to Pro and Max customers who are participating in the research preview. Interested users must join a waitlist to gain entry to the system. This phased rollout allows Anthropic to gather feedback and refine the agent before a broader release.

The entry of Anthropic into this specific market segment signals a broader industry trend. Many rivals are moving away from generic personal assistants toward tools tailored for business use cases. Meta has released a version of Muse for small businesses with app connections, while OpenAI’s Dots integrates with professional tools. Duet joins this growing cohort of agents designed to work on behalf of users in a corporate or small business context. The competition is intensifying as these tools strive to define the next standard for AI productivity.
