Ordinary fans watching from dry living rooms saw a rare sight on a wet field in Tampa on Sunday: the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated the Atlanta Falcons 16-0 while completing not a single pass. The victory relied entirely on the rushing efforts of Bucky Irving and Kenny Gainwell, who carried the offense through a driving rain.

The Buccaneers established a new franchise record for rushing yards with 324 in the contest. Irving rushed for 170 yards and a touchdown on 27 carries, while Gainwell added 140 yards on 25 attempts. Quarterback Baker Mayfield was 0 for 3 in his second game back from a fractured thumb, relying on scrambling and the ground game to move the ball.

This performance marks a historic statistical feat. Tampa Bay became the first team in the Super Bowl era to win a game with zero pass completions. The previous instance occurred on Sept. 29, 1974, when the Buffalo Bills defeated the New York Jets 16-12. In that game, Joe Ferguson was 0 for 2, and O.J. Simpson ran for 117 yards.

Kicker Chase McLaughlin kicked three field goals to keep his perfect season intact at 19 for 19. He converted from 46, 34, and 42 yards to build the 16-0 lead. The Buccaneers' previous rushing high was 283 yards, set by Doug Martin in a 2015 win over Philadelphia. Atlanta's offense struggled in the elements, with Michael Penix Jr. completing 8 of 24 passes for 125 yards and throwing four interceptions.

The game featured several turnovers that sealed the win. Alex Anzalone intercepted Penix twice, including a pick at the 41-yard line. Jacob Parrish also picked off a fourth-down pass from Penix at Tampa Bay's 17, setting up a 65-yard drive. Despite a fumble by Irving out of the end zone, the Buccaneers maintained control of the clock and the ball.

Injuries affected both rosters during the match. Atlanta's Zacchariah Branch and Samson Ebukam left the game with hamstring issues, while Brian Robinson sat out with a similar injury. Tampa Bay lost Yaya Diaby to a knee injury in the first quarter, and Emeka Egbuka was inactive due to a foot issue. The Buccaneers have won three of their last four games after starting the season 0-4.

Tampa Bay currently sits half a game behind Carolina in the NFC South. The team will visit the Chicago Bears next Sunday night in a primetime matchup. Atlanta travels to Madrid to face the Cincinnati Bengals in the NFL's second regular-season game in Spain next week.
