U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio issued a direct call to action for Cubans on Friday, asking them to reach out to the Central Intelligence Agency. He framed the move as an opportunity for residents to drive domestic improvements while the island faces heightened external pressure. Rubio posted the message on X, stating that now is the time for those seeking positive change to act.

The post included a specific directive for readers to seize the moment through a discrete partnership with the CIA. Rubio cited the disappointment of failed promises, widespread corruption, and the privileged lives of a small few as reasons for the shift. The CIA quickly reposted the announcement and added a version written in Spanish. A video attached to the posts provided step-by-step instructions for contacting the agency.

The initiative lands as the island contends with a strict U.S. embargo and new sanctions. These measures aim to pressure the communist government amid soaring prices for basic goods and shrinking access to medical care. Reports indicate that Cubans have waited hours in lines for bread and queued for doctor visits. The U.S. government announced additional economic sanctions last week targeting Cuba's state-run bank, citing institutional ties to Iran.

President Donald Trump addressed the situation during a campaign rally in South Florida on Friday. He referenced U.S. Navy warships currently deployed near the Strait of Hormuz and said the administration would take care of Cuba on the way back from Iran. Trump described a specific scenario where one of the ships would stop about 50 yards off the coast. He said the crew would raise their hands before Rubio arrived to finish the deal.

Cuba's government rejected the rhetoric from Washington. Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla responded on X, stating that the island rejects any threats stemming from U.S. ambitions. He noted that while the coastline features beautiful beaches, it is also rugged and inhospitable to those arriving with hostile intentions and a desire for domination.
