Father Witold Kaczmarzyk usually leads Sunday Mass without visible nerves, but Friday night presented a different challenge. He stepped away from the altar and onto a stage in his church basement in Lakewood, Colorado, to headline two sold-out stand-up comedy shows. An audience of 540 people packed the space for the rare performance.
The event marked a new milestone in Kaczmarzyk’s recent rise to digital fame. Earlier this year, a parishioner photographed him riding a scooter to church. That image went viral, transforming the priest into a social media star. He noted that Facebook took off after the summer incident, and he now receives about two million views per month.
Despite his online popularity, the live performance was a first for Kaczmarzyk. He admitted the experience was stressful, describing himself as shaking before taking the stage. He questioned his choices, asking himself what he was doing with his life since he was just a priest.
Kaczmarzyk has described himself as a shy person in high school and college who hid from people. He said he eventually learned to push through those fears by convincing himself to just do it. That advice seemed to pay off on Friday as he delivered material that drew laughter from the crowd.
One joke that landed well involved his father. Kaczmarzyk told the audience that his dad told him he was not funny. The line drew a strong reaction from the attendees. The performance ended with a standing ovation from the fans who filled the basement.
The priest balances his traditional role with this new public persona. On Sundays, he fills the sanctuary with parishioners. On Friday nights, he fills the basement with comedy fans. His ability to connect with both groups has solidified his unique position in the local community.
