The Royal Bahamas Police Force opened an investigation into a sudden death on the island of Bimini on Tuesday. A 36-year-old woman from Stapleford in Nottinghamshire lost her life after attempting to retrieve her two sons from the water.

Police records indicate the incident occurred near the southern point of the island. The family, consisting of the mother, her husband, and their two boys, had been snorkelling when a strong current took hold. The ocean force swept both children away before carrying the woman with her as she swam toward them. Local responders later recovered the two boys from the water.

Officers at the Alice Town police station received a report shortly after 10 a.m. that a woman was unresponsive at the North Bimini Ferry Dock. They arrived to find she had already been moved to a local clinic for medical care. A doctor at the facility pronounced her dead despite efforts to revive her. Police noted that CPR was administered at the ferry dock after she was pulled from the sea.

The force stated that foul play is not suspected at this time. An autopsy is scheduled to determine the exact cause of death. A Foreign Office spokesperson confirmed that officials are in contact with local authorities to support the family. The spokesperson added that thoughts are with the loved ones of the deceased.
