Senator Chris Murphy, a Democrat from Connecticut, was hospitalized on Saturday after suffering a stroke. His chief of staff, Allison Herwitt, stated on Sunday that he is expected to make a full recovery.
Murphy was 53 years old when he began experiencing numbness in his arm during his son's hockey game on Saturday afternoon. He was taken to a local hospital where medical staff diagnosed the stroke. He was then transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring.
Herwitt reported that Murphy is responding well to treatment. She noted that he is expected to make a complete recovery from the incident.
This event follows a pattern of health issues among lawmakers this year. Senator Mitch McConnell, a Republican from Kentucky, missed months of Senate work due to a hospital stay and rehabilitation. Representative Tom Kean, a Republican from New Jersey, was absent from the Capitol for months while treating depression.
In 2022, three Democratic lawmakers were hospitalized for strokes. These included Senator Ben Ray Lujan of New Mexico, Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, and John Fetterman, who was then a Senate candidate.
Murphy has been active in the midterm cycle as a campaign surrogate for Democratic candidates. He recently returned from a multistop tour in the Middle East. During that tour, he warned that President Trump would escalate the war on Iran after the midterm election. He is also viewed as a possible 2028 presidential contender and a leader on foreign policy issues.
