Violence has reached a significant Christian community in southern Jordan after a coordinated assault on a place of worship. On Friday, armed men attacked a church during a funeral service, resulting in the deaths of at least seven people and injuries to 34 others.
The incident occurred in the village of Hammoud, located within the Karak governorate. Authorities identified the perpetrators as a group of extremists. This type of targeted assault on Christians is considered rare in Jordan, a country where the majority of the population identifies as Sunni Muslim. The Karak region is home to a notable Christian population and sits approximately 110 miles south of the capital city, Amman.
The timeline of the event began when a vehicle carrying the attackers pulled up to the church compound. According to the public security directorate, the gunmen exited the vehicle during the funeral procession. They stormed the premises and immediately opened fire. State broadcaster footage showed two individuals in casual clothing holding pistols and a third person carrying a long gun. They fired from a street entrance before advancing into the building. An eyewitness reported that the shooting continued for about five minutes without pause before the attackers fled the scene.
Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya addressed the public at a press conference to confirm the casualties. He stated that in addition to the seven fatalities, 34 other individuals were wounded. The minister attributed the shooting to a group of extremists. A manhunt for the remaining perpetrators is currently underway. Minister of Government Communications Mohammed Al-Momani indicated that security forces are actively investigating the details of the attack.
King Abdullah II responded to the tragedy with a strong public statement. He pledged the harshest retaliation against those responsible for the violence. On social media, the King emphasized the value of every Jordanian life. He declared that the nation would strike with an iron fist against those who threaten its stability. This firm language signals a high level of national concern regarding the security of minority communities.
The attack has also drawn international attention, particularly from within the Arab world. Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, who is the only Christian head of state in the region, condemned the event as a heinous terrorist attack. In a statement from the presidency, Aoun noted that the violence reaffirms that terrorism has no specific religion or homeland. He argued that the aim of such acts is to strike at coexistence and spread strife among different groups.
The Karak area has a history of deadly violence. In 2016, gunmen ambushed police in a series of attacks in the region. One of these incidents took place at a Crusader castle that is popular with tourists. That series of attacks resulted in the deaths of ten people, including seven officers, and left dozens wounded. Jordanian security forces eventually killed the attackers after a lengthy standoff. The current incident marks another significant disruption to the security of the area.
As the investigation continues, the focus remains on identifying the specific extremist group involved. The fact that the attack occurred during a funeral, a time of solemn gathering, has heightened the sense of shock among local residents. Security forces are working to secure the area while they pursue the suspects. The next steps will likely involve a detailed review of the footage and witness accounts to establish a clear motive for the shooting.
