Jesús de Miguel, a 30-year-old forward for Tenerife, died on Tuesday morning following a collision during a second-division match on Monday. The Spanish National Police confirmed on Tuesday that legal proceedings have begun, and prosecutors will join the investigation into the incident.
The collision occurred during added time while De Miguel challenged for a ball near the midfield. Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono rushed out of his area to contest a long ball and struck De Miguel in the chest. Owono received a straight red card. De Miguel remained on his knees clutching his torso before falling onto his back. The match, tied 2-2 at the time, was abandoned.
Tenerife stated that De Miguel suffered cardiac arrest on the pitch. His pulse was restored during the ambulance ride to the hospital. His condition later worsened neurologically, and the club announced his death at 8 a.m. Tuesday. The club described the loss as heartbreak and asked the public to respect the family's privacy.
The investigation aims to determine the circumstances of the injury and the medical response. De Miguel was a native of Madrid who made his professional debut in 2015 with Leganés B. He played for several lower-division clubs before joining Tenerife last year. Andorra, owned by Gerard Pique, sent condolences to the family and colleagues. The Spanish soccer federation and La Liga also issued statements of sympathy.
Clubs across the league paused activities to honor De Miguel. Real Madrid players observed a minute of silence during training. Espanyol postponed the presentation of its new coach. The Spanish soccer federation delayed two Copa del Rey matches and one Copa de la Reina match scheduled for the week. Manchester United and Liverpool posted messages of condolence on social media.
Life-threatening injuries from collisions are rare in soccer. The sport has seen previous tragic losses, including the death of 19-year-old goalkeeper Raúl Ramírez in a fifth-division match last year. In 2001, Ukrainian goalkeeper Serhiy Perkhun died from head injuries sustained in a collision while playing for CSKA Moscow.
