Anthropic IPO Looms as Early Backers See Multi Billion Gains
Investors who backed the AI firm at its lowest valuations are poised for massive returns ahead of a potential public listing this year.

The impending public listing of Anthropic is set to redefine the financial landscape for its earliest supporters. With a projected valuation reaching as high as two trillion dollars, the company is on track to deliver extraordinary returns to the venture capitalists and angel investors who took significant risks when the startup was just beginning to gain traction. Even before the official stock debut, the paper wealth generated by the firm's latest private valuation has already transformed modest early investments into portfolios worth billions. This windfall is not just a theoretical possibility but a concrete reality for those who held onto their stakes through the company's rapid ascent.
The current private market valuation stands at 965 billion dollars. At this price point, the stakes held by key investors already represent substantial sums. However, the true magnitude of these gains will likely become clear only when the company goes public. The gap between the current private price and the anticipated public valuation suggests that these holdings could see their value double, creating a historic financial event for the technology sector. For the Southwest region and beyond, this signals a shift in how high-growth tech assets are perceived by major institutional players.
To understand the scale of this potential payout, one must look back at the timeline of Anthropic's funding history. The company's journey from a modest startup to a global AI leader has been marked by aggressive capital raises. Each round of funding attracted new investors while driving up the entry price for subsequent backers. The contrast between the initial investment levels and the current valuations highlights the extraordinary speed of growth in the artificial intelligence industry. This trajectory has created a distinct tier of beneficiaries who entered the market before the AI boom became a mainstream investment theme.
Eric Schmidt, the former chief executive of Google, is among the most prominent early beneficiaries. According to data from PitchBook, Schmidt participated in the Series A round in 2021. At that time, Anthropic was valued at 461 million dollars. His investment at that early stage has since grown significantly. Today, he owns approximately one percent of the company. At the current private valuation of 965 billion dollars, his stake is worth nearly 10 billion dollars. This represents a massive return on an initial bet made just a few years ago, underscoring the power of early entry in the AI space.
Later-stage investors have also seen dramatic appreciation in their holdings. Iconiq, an investment firm, wrote a check for 6 billion dollars to Anthropic last year. This investment occurred when the company was already valued at 183 billion dollars. Despite the high entry price, that massive late-stage bet is now worth 17 billion dollars. If the IPO proceeds as expected, this position has the potential to double in value. This case illustrates that even high-profile, large-scale investments made in recent years can yield substantial returns in the current market environment.
Menlo Ventures holds another significant position in the company. The firm led the Series D funding round and has invested more than 1 billion dollars in Anthropic over time. Their cumulative stake is currently valued at 14 billion dollars. This figure reflects the firm's sustained commitment to the AI lab and its ability to capitalize on the company's expansion. The size of this holding places Menlo Ventures among the top institutional beneficiaries of the upcoming public listing.
Sequoia, one of the most famous venture capital firms in the industry, entered the picture later this year. They backed the AI lab for the first time when the company was already valued at 380 billion dollars. Their 3 billion dollar investment secured them roughly one percent ownership. Despite entering at a much higher valuation than earlier backers, Sequoia has already more than doubled its investment. This rapid appreciation is a testament to the momentum surrounding Anthropic's technology and market position.
Sound Ventures, a firm launched by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher, also holds a notable stake. The firm initially invested 35 million dollars in the 2023 Series C round. Since then, they have funneled an additional 400 million dollars into the company. This combined investment has resulted in a stake worth billions of dollars today. It is worth noting that Kutcher left Sound Ventures this year to launch a new venture capital firm, but the original investment remains a significant asset for the entity.
Spark Capital occupies a unique position as the only venture capital firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic. They invested 75 million dollars in the same 2023 Series C round, when the company was valued at 5 billion dollars. That initial position has ballooned more than ninetyfold to a value of 7 billion dollars. This massive multiple on investment is rare even in the tech industry and highlights the explosive growth potential of leading AI companies.
As the company moves toward its public listing, the focus will shift from private valuation metrics to public market performance. The anticipated IPO at a valuation of up to two trillion dollars will serve as the final test of these investments. For the backers listed here, the outcome will cement their status as major winners in the AI revolution. The coming months will determine whether these paper fortunes translate into liquid assets, marking a pivotal moment for the industry and its investors.
