A 12-foot skeleton that weighs 90 pounds and costs $299 has sold out before Halloween every year since it appeared on Home Depot shelves in 2020. The figure, called Skelly, has LCD eyes that glow, and buyers have set it up on lawns from California to New Jersey and on brownstone stoops in Brooklyn. Some dress it in costumes. Some leave it bare. The skeleton stands next to jack-o-lanterns and plastic gravestones marked with phrases such as "Rest In Pieces."

Home Depot has kept the figure in stock by adding to the line. In 2024, the company released a chest attachment that produces lightning effects. In 2026, Skelly gained a Bluetooth connection that lets owners record sounds or speak live through it. The line now includes a dog, a cat, and a 6½-foot skeleton for buyers who want a smaller version. Aubrey Horowitz, merchant of Decorative Holiday at Home Depot, said the company has sold the 12-foot skeleton out before Halloween every year since launch.

Skelly arrived in 2020, during a year marked by pandemic grief, fear, and lockdown shopping. The figure went on sale at $299 and drew buyers who wanted it for their yards. Owners have since kept Skelly up through the rest of the year, dressing it for Christmas, the Fourth of July, and summer. Horowitz called the skeleton "the ultimate American decoration" and said the company sees value in nostalgia and in connections with neighbors. "We really love this sense of nostalgia and having some form of connection with our communities and the people that live around us," Horowitz said. "And frankly, you know, a lot of times bigger is better."

Halloween in the United States includes pillowcases of candy, costumes for babies, adults, dogs, and some cats, and yard displays built to scale. The United States did not invent Halloween. The size of its celebrations is a different matter. Home Depot sells Skelly for $299, and the 12-foot figure has sold out before Halloween each year since 2020.
