Temperatures in the 60s at the Norris Penrose Event Center in Colorado Springs created ideal conditions for the state cross country championships on Saturday. The Niwot Cougars capitalized on the weather to secure a complete sweep of the 5A classification, extending a dynasty built on long-distance commitment and depth.

The girls team claimed its seventh state title in the last eight seasons. They placed all five scoring runners in the top 15, finishing with 47 points. Boulder followed with 100 points, and Fairview took third with 116. Josephine Lenart, a transfer from Pennsylvania, was the highest-placed Niwot runner in the individual race, finishing sixth in 18:36.90. Elise Hagen placed ninth, and Siona Kelly finished 10th. The team won without an individual star leading the pack, as Addy Ritzenhein, who won three consecutive individual titles from 2023 to 2025, now runs for Northern Arizona University.

Cherokee Trail’s Madison Lange captured the individual girls title in 17:28. She finished 25.60 seconds ahead of Heritage’s Ella McGowan. Lange described her victory as redemption after placing 21st at the state meet one year ago. She said she wanted to win while keeping a smile on her face.

On the boys side, Niwot earned its fourth consecutive team title and its sixth since 2019. The Cougars accumulated 60 points, beating runner-up Arapahoe by 83 points. Sophomore Jude Ritzenhein led the team with a second-place finish in 15:11.40. He finished 15 seconds behind winner Abdinasir Hassan of Northfield, who clocked 14:56.50. Hassan won all six meets he entered this fall.

Ritzenhein acknowledged the attention the program receives due to its success. He said the people at the school are special and that everyone makes the experience special. Lenart, who recently moved to Colorado for her father’s business, noted that she had kept in touch with teammate Siona Kelly since meeting at the HOKA Festival of Miles in St. Louis during middle school. Kelly said the team’s chemistry allows them to support each other through hard training and racing. Hagen added that approximately 20 girls on the team can run together.

Niwot and individual champions Lange and Hassan will compete at the Nike Cross Regionals Southwest in Mesa, Arizona, on Nov. 21. They aim to qualify for the NXN event scheduled for Dec. 5 in Portland, Oregon. The Cougars have won the NXN boys team title in each of the last two years.
