SpaceX Rejects US Military Launch Offers

The company declined three Space Force contracts as a NASA panel flagged high refueling needs for lunar missions.

SpaceX recently turned down an offer from the United States Space Force. The company declined to accept three military launch contracts that were presented to it. This move came alongside other significant news regarding SpaceX's operations and future plans. The company's refusal to participate in these specific defense launches marks a notable shift in its relationship with military space programs. The decision was announced on Thursday, and it has raised questions about the company's strategic priorities.

At the same time, a NASA safety panel issued a concerning assessment regarding SpaceX's Starship vehicle. The panel reported that supporting a lunar landing mission might require as many as 22 refueling flights. This high number of refuelings is a significant factor in the planning and execution of future missions to the moon. The panel's findings highlight the complexity and scale of the operations required for deep space exploration. These statements were made public on Thursday, providing a clear picture of the challenges ahead for lunar missions.

PLD Space is making progress on its Miura 5 rocket. The company reports that the vehicle is nearing its final integration phase. This rocket is the first of three Miura 5s that have already been manufactured. The other two are designed to qualify key system elements for future missions. PLD Space CEO Raúl Torres provided an update on this program on October 19. The company is targeting a first flight for this small-lift vehicle before mid-2027.

The manufacturing of these three vehicles has allowed the company's teams to work continuously across different stages of production and integration. This process ensures that lessons learned from each qualification campaign are applied directly to the launch vehicle. One Miura 5 second stage is now fully integrated to begin system-level testing under representative operating conditions. This second stage is currently at PLD's Teruel test facility for its qualification campaign. The campaign includes a wet dress rehearsal and a static hot-fire test.

Reaction Dynamics, a Canadian launch startup, is seeking to raise $350 million in funding. The company plans to use this capital to grow its staff from 68 to more than 350 people. Reaction Dynamics is developing the small-lift Aurora rocket, with the goal of reaching orbit in 2028. The company has also announced plans to build a medium-lift rocket named Borealis. This second vehicle is scheduled for a debut by 2031. The company is one of three prominent Canadian launch startups operating in the sector.
