Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany is in hospital and expected to be out for several weeks after collapsing on the training pitch on Friday. The club announced the news on Saturday, confirming that the 40-year-old remains in stable condition while medical teams work to identify the specific virus causing his illness.

Max Eberl, the club's director of sport, addressed reporters on Saturday to provide updates. He stated that no specific recovery timeline had been set yet because the medical team needs to fully understand the nature of the illness first. Eberl emphasized that the club would give Kompany all the time he needs, describing the absence as a matter of weeks rather than days.

Aaron Danks, an English assistant coach, will lead the team on the field for Sunday's Bundesliga match against Freiburg. Danks spoke at the press conference in Kompany's stead. He noted that he had a brief conversation with the manager on Friday, where they kept the discussion strictly to health and well-being without diving into football tactics.

"I explained to him that we wouldn't be having no football conversations. It was just checking in on his health and making sure he's OK," Danks said. He added that the coaching staff would work together to maintain the club's momentum during this period.

The club did not seek a postponement for the upcoming league fixture. Eberl indicated that a strong performance and a win would be the best way to support Kompany's recovery. "That would probably be one of the best things we could do to help him recover," he told the press.

Bayern's second team game on Friday was cancelled following the incident. The first team also faces a personnel change with the absence of Germany captain Joshua Kimmich. Danks confirmed that Kimmich, who has been on bereavement leave since Tuesday, will not play against Freiburg.

Kompany returned to the dugout for Wednesday's home game against Arsenal despite the virus. He admitted afterward that he had ignored early warning signs from his body. Bayern Munich currently leads the Bundesliga table by one point over Freiburg. The team plays Atletico Madrid in the Champions League on November 3.
