Jose Mourinho returns to Barcelona this Sunday to manage Real Madrid in a league clash that could reshape the title race. The match at Camp Nou offers Madrid a chance to reduce the gap between the two rivals from six points to three. Barcelona currently leads the standings and seeks to stretch that advantage to nine points if it wins.
Real Madrid enters the game on a four-match winning streak. A victory would also interrupt a difficult trend in which the club has lost six of the last seven El Clasicos. Barcelona, by contrast, suffered its first defeat of the season earlier this week. The team lost 4-2 to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League on Tuesday, a result that complicated its approach to the derby.
Mourinho, 63, brings extensive experience to the fixture. He has played in 27 matches against Barcelona and managed 17 El Clasicos from the Real Madrid bench. Florentino Perez appointed the Portuguese manager in 2010 to challenge Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona. That period included some of the most intense encounters in the history of the rivalry. Cameras will focus closely on Mourinho during the match at Camp Nou.
Hansi Flick, Barcelona’s manager, acknowledged the confidence arriving with his opponents. He stated that he has the highest respect for Mourinho. "When you’re managing teams on this level for so many years and you always have success, it’s about quality," Flick said. He noted that the team is in an initial phase where both the coach and players are still learning about each other. Flick described comparing the team to more established sides as unfair.
The loss in Paris provided specific lessons for Flick’s squad. "We analysed this game. We did many things really good, but we saw some situations where we have to improve," Flick said. He viewed the upcoming match as a chance for the team to grow and challenge itself against one of the best clubs in the world.
Both managers agreed on the unique nature of the event. Flick called the match incredible and the best in the sport. Mourinho emphasized that recent form does not carry over into the El Clasico. "It has no influence," Mourinho said. He hoped for a great game and a win for his side.
