Mbappe cites 22 World Cup goals in Ballon d'Or push

Kylian Mbappe is not the favorite to win the Ballon d'Or, but he has made his case for the individual prize loud and clear. The 2025-26 season ended without a major trophy for the France forward, yet he points to a new set of global records to support his bid. The award will be presented at a ceremony in London on Monday. While the prize carries no cash value, winning it increases a player's market value and standing in the sport.

Mbappe's strongest evidence comes from the 2026 World Cup in North America. He finished as the all-time leading scorer in tournament history with 22 goals in 22 matches. That total places him ahead of Lionel Messi, who has 21, and Miroslav Klose, who has 16. Mbappe won the Golden Boot for the second consecutive tournament. He told reporters last month that overtaking historical legends in the sport's most important competition is a defining achievement. When asked who he was voting for, the former Paris Saint-Germain forward replied: "Myself."

His club performance also featured high individual totals. Mbappe scored 25 goals to finish as La Liga's top scorer for Real Madrid. He added 15 goals in the Champions League, where he also led the scoring charts. He stated that being the top scorer in all major competitions makes this a strong year for him. He feels confident in his standing for the award based on these numbers.

The main weakness in his argument is the lack of team success. Real Madrid finished second in La Liga and lost to Bayern Munich in the Champions League quarterfinals. This marks a second straight season without a major trophy for the club. France also fell short at the World Cup, finishing fourth after losses to Spain in the semifinals and England in the third-place playoff. The team changed managers during the season, moving from Xabi Alonso to Alvaro Arbeloa.

His rivals have more silverware to show. Lamine Yamal won the World Cup with Spain and La Liga with Barcelona. Harry Kane won three trophies for Bayern Munich, including the Bundesliga title. Despite these achievements by competitors, Mbappe remains unconcerned. He told radio station RFI that the award goes to a player, not a team. He believes individual performance and memorable moments are what voters consider for this specific prize.

Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho supports Mbappe's position. Mourinho noted that history was made this summer by a player who is not from Paris Saint-Germain or the Spanish national team. This public backing adds weight to Mbappe's campaign from his current club leadership.

Historical trends favor trophy winners. In the past decade, every Ballon d'Or recipient won at least one major title during the award year. Ousmane Dembele won in 2025 after helping PSG win the Champions League. Rodri won two years ago after claiming Euro 2024 and the Premier League. However, there is one recent precedent for a winner without a major trophy. Cristiano Ronaldo won the award in 2013 after scoring 66 goals, despite his team finishing as league runners-up. That result suggests a path exists for Mbappe, who has been nominated nine times and placed third in 2023.
