Manchester City lost 2-1 to Aston Villa on Saturday, ending the club's flawless start to the Premier League season. The defeat marked the first loss for manager Enzo Maresca in his opening seven matches with the team. Nicolas Jackson scored both goals for the visitors in the contest at Villa Park.
Aston Villa established the lead in the sixth minute. Marc Guehi dropped the ball, allowing Jackson to cut inside Elliott Anderson. Jackson then struck a high shot past goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma to open the scoring.
City controlled possession for much of the first half but faced consistent resistance from Villa goalkeeper Zion Suzuki. Suzuki denied shots from Iliman Ndiaye, Rayan Cherki, and Abdukodir Khusanov. Ndiaye also struck the post before the halftime break.
Erling Haaland equalized for City in the 52nd minute. He headed in a cross from Ndiaye to mark his 13th goal in 10 appearances this season. Josko Gvardiol subsequently tested Suzuki with a fierce drive that hit the crossbar.
Villa regained the lead in the 60th minute. Ibrahim Mbaye crossed the ball from behind the defense, and Jackson finished low past Donnarumma. City pushed for a second equalizer in the remaining time but failed to break through.
The result leaves City vulnerable at the top of the table. Arsenal can move level on points if they defeat Everton later on Saturday. For Villa, the win is their sixth in seven matches across all competitions. The victory moves the club to sixth place in the standings.
The win continues a trend at Villa Park, where City have lost in each of the last four seasons. Unai Emery has maintained the club's upward trajectory despite losing six starting players from last season's Europa League squad. New signings Jackson, Suzuki, Mbaye, and Johan Manzambi have contributed to this success. City faces a separate challenge as it appeals a guilty verdict on over 100 charges regarding financial rule breaches between 2009 and 2018.
