The United States and Iran have engaged in a military conflict for more than eight months, a war that began with a promise of swift resolution but extended into a prolonged struggle over energy routes. Iranian leadership reacted to the Democratic midterm victory on Wednesday by declaring that the United States is moving faster toward collapse.

Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, the current Supreme Leader, posted on an official English-language account on X that the process of US collapse has accelerated. He characterized the United States as the Great Satan, stating that any move toward submission would destroy the gains achieved through the sacrifices of the Iranian nation. Khamenei warned that showing weakness would embolden the enemy to launch additional wars and acts of aggression.

Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who also serves as Tehran's chief negotiator with Washington, framed the election results as a public rejection of war. He stated that Americans voted against the cost of living and the conflict itself. Ghalibaf added a warning that if the US government betrays its public will to serve international interests, Iran's refusal to negotiate will be accompanied by a nightmare.

Democrats seized control of Congress on Tuesday night, ending Republican dominance in both chambers. The election took place after a campaign focused heavily on affordability. The war with Iran, which President Donald Trump initially predicted would last only weeks, contributed to rising energy prices and higher costs for gasoline and goods. Trump acknowledged after the results that Iran partly played a role in the Republican losses, while Vice President JD Vance stated more bluntly that the war was the reason for the defeat.

The conflict began earlier this year with Operation Epic Fury, during which US and Israeli strikes targeted senior Iranian military leaders and infrastructure. Trump originally estimated the campaign would take four to six weeks. Iran retaliated by restricting commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a waterway that previously carried about a fifth of the world's oil supply. Iranian forces also attacked energy infrastructure in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.

According to the International Monetary Fund, more than 1.1 billion barrels of crude oil were disrupted by the end of May. Oil flows remained below prewar levels into the fall, even after US operations restored some traffic through the strait. By October, Trump disputed his earlier timeline, clarifying that the four-to-six-week estimate referred specifically to eliminating Iran's nuclear threat rather than ending the entire conflict. Iranian Deputy Parliament Speaker Ali Nikzad described the Republican losses as the aftershocks of Trump's defeat at the hands of Iran.

A senior official in the office of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said the war and US support for Israel delivered Republicans a historic electoral defeat. The statements from Tehran align with polling data from ahead of Election Day, which showed deep public dissatisfaction with the conflict. The war's economic impact on American households became a central issue for voters, linking military strategy directly to consumer prices.
