The Phoenix Symphony board of directors suspended the remainder of the 2026-27 season last week, leaving 66 musicians without employment starting next week. The suspension follows the orchestra's November 1 concert. The decision was driven by a lack of funding.
Local businesses and community members have begun organizing support for the affected players. On Wednesday, Small Giants, a Phoenix marketing agency, hosted a 20th-anniversary office party that included performances by several symphony members. The group played in the lobby as guests arrived, using the event to raise awareness about the orchestra's sudden closure.
Danielle Feroleto, the CEO of Small Giants, stated she wanted to help after hearing the news. She described the agency as being full of creatives who are concerned about the city losing its symphony after Friday. Feroleto launched a GoFundMe page to provide direct financial assistance to the musicians. The funds will help cover bills, meals, and other immediate needs during their time out of work.
Thea Humphries, a French horn player with the orchestra, said the musicians are grateful for the community response. She noted that the group is impressed by the support shown by the city of Phoenix and local residents.
Tuba player Thea Cristina Cutts said many of her colleagues have families that were not prepared for the sudden shutdown. She explained that the musicians have completed extensive training and auditions to reach their current positions. Cutts stated that the group simply wants to play music and that they are not going anywhere.
The 66 musicians will be without work until the board announces otherwise. The GoFundMe page remains the primary channel for community donations aimed at supporting the players financially during the suspension.
