Turnover Margin of -11: The Stat Defining the Cowboys' Struggle Against Arizona
Dallas has lost four straight to the Cardinals, a streak coach Brian Schottenheimer attributes to ball security rather than team energy.

The Dallas Cowboys face a specific statistical hurdle in Week 8 against the Arizona Cardinals: a turnover differential of minus-11 across their last nine matchups since 2008. Head coach Brian Schottenheimer argues this metric, not team intensity, explains why Dallas has lost four consecutive games to Arizona.
Schottenheimer pushed back on the narrative that the Cardinals simply out-excite the Cowboys. He pointed to the -11 turnover margin as the primary driver of the Cowboys' recent losses. In the 2025 season finale, a Monday night defeat at home, Dallas committed three turnovers without forcing one. That sequence dropped the team into a 17-point deficit early in the second half.
The data supports the coach's assessment of the ball's role in these contests. In the 2026 season, the Cowboys have committed zero turnovers in their three victories. Conversely, all four of their losses this year involve at least one turnover. Schottenheimer noted that last year’s margin in these specific games was minus-3, indicating a slight improvement in consistency, though the long-term trend remains unfavorable for Dallas.
Wide receiver CeeDee Lamb offers a different perspective. In his seventh NFL season, Lamb has never beaten the Cardinals, dropping all four meetings since his 2020 draft. He described the Cardinals as playing with higher energy regardless of the time slot, treating the matchup as if Arizona is a Super Bowl contender. Lamb said the Cowboys have been too relaxed in their approach, allowing Arizona to dictate the pace.
The upcoming Sunday contest pits the league’s fifth-ranked scoring offense against the league’s worst scoring defense. Dallas averages 27.0 points per game, while Arizona allows 29.7. Arizona’s offensive efficiency is low, ranking last in red zone touchdown conversion at 42.9%. DraftKings Sportsbook lists the Cowboys as seven-point home favorites.
Quarterback Dak Prescott acknowledged the recent history but emphasized execution over sentiment. He credited the Cardinals' defensive execution and preparation in past meetings. For the Cowboys, the path to ending the four-game losing streak requires limiting mistakes and leveraging their home advantage against an opponent with porous defensive numbers.
