Walter Koenig, who portrayed Ensign Pavel Chekov on Star Trek: The Original Series, has died at age 90. His representative confirmed on Tuesday that Koenig passed away from natural causes on Sunday at his residence in North Hollywood.

William Shatner, who played Captain James T. Kirk, announced the news on X on Tuesday. He stated that he was deeply saddened to learn of his co-star's passing. Shatner noted that although the two did not know each other well away from the set, they shared the later seasons of the original series and the six films that followed.

The original series ran for three seasons from 1966 to 1969. Koenig joined the cast in 1967 for the second season. Shatner recalled observing a man who genuinely loved the Star Trek community. He added that Koenig preferred to be among the people who had kept the franchise alive rather than remaining behind a signing table at conventions.

Shatner concluded that such a genuine connection is rare and will be remembered by everyone who came into contact with Koenig. The tribute highlighted the bond between the two actors over their long careers in the franchise.

Fellow cast member George Takei, who played Hikaru Sulu throughout all three seasons, also paid tribute to Koenig on Facebook on Monday. Takei described Koenig as more than just the character he played. He called him a writer, a teacher, a thoughtful man, and a loyal friend.

Takei thanked the fans who loved Koenig for so many years, noting that Koenig loved them in return. He closed his message by telling his dear friend to rest well and keep navigating a steady course.
