The Associated Press called the U.S. Senate race in Michigan for Democrat Abdul El-Sayed on Tuesday. This victory marks a shift in a key Midwest battleground that many observers watched to gauge the strength of anti-establishment candidates.
El-Sayed, 42, defeated former Republican Rep. Mike Rogers. Rogers previously lost a bid for the same seat in 2024. The win makes El-Sayed the first Muslim American to serve in the U.S. Senate.
The campaign focused on the cost of living and corporate influence in politics. El-Sayed prioritized single-payer healthcare and curbing money in elections. He described himself as a Democrat rather than a democratic socialist, distinguishing himself from other insurgent candidates this cycle. His platform attracted backing from prominent figures on the political left.
The path to the general election included internal party friction. In the primary, El-Sayed defeated Rep. Haley Stevens by approximately one percentage point. That contest occurred despite support for Stevens from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and Sen. Gary Peters. In the final days before the general election, Stevens endorsed Rogers after initially indicating she would support the Democratic ticket.
Rogers aligned with President Trump, who endorsed the Republican early in the race. Rogers adopted some of the president's claims regarding election fraud, a stance he had previously criticized after the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. As the election approached, Rogers attempted to distance himself from certain presidential policies, including the war in Iran.
El-Sayed, a Michigan native, previously directed health departments in Wayne County and Detroit. He first entered politics with a 2018 bid for governor. During the campaign, he criticized Republicans for using Islamophobic rhetoric against him. His positions on Israel drew attention, including a later apology regarding comments made after a truck-ramming attack at a metro Detroit synagogue preschool.
El-Sayed signaled he will be a prominent voice within the party. Michigan holds a prime position in the presidential nominating process for 2028. The result leaves Democrats managing their identity after two years in the political wilderness.
