Jacob Allen Morley stood handcuffed in a field in Carroll County, Missouri, as officers led him away on Tuesday morning. The 28-year-old convicted murderer had been on the run for nine days after escaping a Tennessee prison, ending a pursuit that spanned three states and involved multiple law enforcement agencies.

Morley was serving a life sentence for the 2022 killing of his colleague, Cody Birchfield. He broke into freedom from the Northwest Correctional Complex in Tiptonville, located 90 miles north of Memphis, at 11:30 p.m. on October 25. Security footage showed him in his prison uniform climbing over the facility's fence. Hours later, he stole a vehicle from a nearby farm to continue his flight.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation announced his capture on Wednesday, crediting a tip that placed him at a property in Illinois. A truck was also stolen from that location. Authorities tracked the vehicle's license plate using automatic reader technology as it moved through Missouri. The Missouri State Highway Patrol apprehended Morley without incident at 11:34 a.m. on Tuesday. Three firearms previously reported stolen were recovered from the vehicle.

The manhunt required coordination between local, state, and federal partners. The Kansas City Police Department, Independence Police Department, FBI, US Marshals Service, and Homeland Security Investigations all contributed officers to the operation. The Tennessee Department of Correction initially offered a $2,500 reward for information leading to his arrest. That amount increased by $15,000 on Wednesday, though the bureau did not specify if the payout was made.

Morley’s conviction stems from the death of Birchfield, whose body was found in a metal box under Morley's home. A pathology report cited in court records stated Birchfield died from a gunshot wound to the back of the head. Bullet casings matched a gun found in Morley's house. Birchfield’s sister told the court the two had developed a friendship while working at a pallet manufacturing company, where Birchfield was training Morley. In addition to first-degree murder, Morley was convicted of vandalism, tampering with evidence, aggravated burglary, and evading arrest.

This was not Morley's first time leading police on a chase. His initial arrest in 2022 followed a pursuit that crossed into North Carolina. The Northwest Correctional Complex holds up to 1,776 inmates ranging from low to maximum security. The facility has faced scrutiny for violence, with a grand jury returning dozens of indictments in July for staff assaults and the murders of five inmates.

The next steps in Morley's legal case are not yet detailed in the available reports. His request for a new trial was denied in May, following his sentencing in June 2025.
